The IRS is a government agency on life
support! As many have said before me, it is and has been the most hated and
feared agency in the history of the US. Now it is also the most distrusted and
despised.
Being hated as a part of a bureaucracy is
not a fatal flaw but being mistrusted in a democracy is. The American people
will not for long countenance the scandal that is turning into a demand for a
criminal investigation. This IRS scandal is far more serious than the one that
faced the Nixon Presidency where the "plumbers" and the President merely
"endeavored" to use the agency to attack their enemies.
In the present situation, the feeling is
mounting that crimes have been committed, a Special Prosecutor should be
appointed and people should go to jail.
Lois Lerner has a history of
inappropriate partisan activity and she comes across as contemptuous of both the
Congress and the people who paid her salary but she and others could not have
concocted and managed this assault on the enemies of Obama, without orders from
above. Nine Democratic Senators wanted to sic the IRS on 501 (c) (3) and 501
(c) (4) tax exempt applicants whom they believed privately were political
enemies while claiming publicly they were law breakers but they would not have
taken this unethical and probably illegal path without a White House which micro
manages all things political...giving the OK.
Everyone who is found to be involved with
this outrage should be investigated, prosecuted or impeached or thrown out of
office. The IRS should cease to exist and the monstrous, ridiculous and
unintelligible Tax Code should disappear with it. This is the moment for
serious tax reform with limited deductions and credits and lower rates for
everyone across the board from personal to corporate to money earned by
investments or earned outside of the country.
In the short term there should be no
taxation without a real and thorough investigation. In the mid and far term there should be no
taxation without clarity and simplification. Lastly there should never
again be created an undemocratic,
unaccountable and un-Americam governmental entity like the
IRS.
On another note but directly related to
the above is how most of the press and media is covering (or not covering) the
entire IRS debacle.
The vast majority of what is now clearly
Democratic or Obama press or media have failed to even mention the latest
chapter of the IRS scandal...i.e. the lost emails. Again despite the entirety
of the calumny of this affair which has yet to see an end...it is a thousand
times more egregious then what Nixon tried to do. Why is it that in that
infamy, one could not escape for a moment, the wall to wall reporting about
it? The answer is that the so called "mainstream" press and media have stopped
even trying to pretend that they are objective purveyors of the
news.
They either don't report the story or
they distort the facts of the story or they under report the story or they
lie. They do all of the above with arrogant disregard for both facts and the
truth.
In the case at hand they have failed to
report on the targeting of Obamas' enemies and then failed to report on the
administrations' cover up of that targeting and then failed to report on their
failures to do either.
The Bill of Rights set aside special
protections for the Fourth Estate because the press was yet another check and
balance on the government. If government and its practitioners should become
inept, corrupt or immoral and neither of the other branches should protest or
not be heard or paid attention to in their protest, then it was the job of the
press to inform, alert and warn the true rulers of the nation...the
people.
The press was supposed to be the sunlight
that disinfected the wound made on the body politic by villains, zealots and fools. The press
is supposed to be the sentinel on the watchtower of the
Republic.
Todays'
press and media phones it in.
Gallup now shows the favorability of the press at 22% and sinking. It is a
reflection of a growing and shared perception that there seems to be not a
smidgen of integrity left in the modern American Fourth
Estate.
